饶广平跟整个二楼的商户们已经被赶了出来,他们正联合起来状告商场,真难啊,饶广平她们现在只有把货运回家里,然后找了辆花车摆了衣服在德化步行街她们的路下卖,失去了根据地了,可是她们仍没有放弃······
       初见饶广平,她正在她那家叫“衣种姿态”的店里的沙发上斜躺着,还抱着一只布娃娃,看上去就是稚气未脱的一个小女孩,然而就是这样一个女孩已经投资几万做起了小老板••••••一直以来,很多人都是由于自己工作不顺心,觉得给老板打工又苦又累,才自己开店做老板的。然而让我惊奇的是,绕广平不是出于这个原因才会自己创业的。


 


白领女孩为理想放弃安稳工作


       2007年6月,饶广平毕业于河南商业高等专科学校的商务英语专业,在开店之前她在河南顺驰网络不动产公司做过房产经纪人,这份工作里还有一段小插曲。 07年5月份的时候,她去了一场招聘会,那时她还没有正式毕业,填写了两份求职简历,其中一个是河南顺驰网络不动产公司的一个文职位置。面试后有一天接到公司通知,去了公司后有位负责人跟她谈了一些话,说觉得她挺适合做房产经纪人的,问她愿不愿意,愿意的话第二天就可以直接来上班。然而就在同一天另外一家公司也打电话通知让她再去复试。她矛盾了一个晚上,第二天就去河南顺驰网络不动产公司做房产经纪人了。她说当时她是她们班很早就工作了的少数几个人之一,很是被大家羡慕了一阵儿。


       她说本来的工作挺清闲的、安逸,觉得“安逸的生活就是倒退的生活”。于是想要做自己做喜欢的事,出于女孩子天生对流行、时尚、服饰的喜爱和追逐,便萌生了开店的念头。


       大多数人都会认为女孩还是安稳些好,有一份不错的工作就安安稳稳的做着就行了。因此饶广平开店的想法遭到了家人的强烈反对,但她认为人生应该有一些自己的追求,便坚持自己的想法。正好这时她的一个同学做腻了白领工作,愿意跟饶广平一起闯一闯,一拍即合,两人把之前工作的积蓄清点了一下,又找同学借了一些钱,凑了3、4万块钱,准备大干一场。


       初涉商场遭欺诈 积极经营不气馁

       饶广平辞掉了工作,开始在网上查找有关商品买卖房的出租转让的信息。某日她看到一则信息说杰茜卡流行生活馆有家店要转让,生活馆位于二七广场附近的德化步行街上,这一下子吸引了她,就跑去看了店面,到了地方又觉得那家店在商场中处的位置不太好,正好看到商场里的另一家店也要转让,考虑到这家店紧挨着楼梯,客源会比较好,就和这家的店主洽谈关于接手店面的事了。女孩就是太容易凭感觉办事,太跟着感觉走了。当时她们还觉得接手这个地方不用太折腾,简单的装修一下就能直接营业,不会浪费太多时间和精力。她们上午来看的店,下午就来把合同签了。30平方的店,转让费加上前期的房租她一下子交了将近4万,就这样,“衣种姿态”开业了。


       然而不久,饶广平和同学就明白了前任店主之所以这么急于转让是因为她已经从内部得到消息,知道商场要重新装修。装修不仅会耽误掉很多营业时间,而且商场重新装修后又会重新招商,就此会产生很大的损失。而前任店主明知道要装修把店转手给其他人,已经算是商业欺诈了。她们是今年6月份接手的这个店,到现在还不到两个月时间,商场已经开始让她们撤柜了。而且记者看到,周围一些店已经撤掉了,整个二楼只剩下楼梯周围的几家了。


       接手这个店的时候正是淡季开始的时候,因此“衣种姿态”的营业状况并不是很好,但行业情形一般都是淡季接店,等熬过淡季,九、十月份就会进入销售旺季。她们说虽然她们在一定程度上上当受骗了,但他们依然会以积极乐观的心态面对,好好做眼下的生意,等旺季的到来。


       寄语创业者 看清形势 避免冲动


       经历了这样的商业欺诈,饶广平说想借自己的亲身经历告诉想要创业的大学生,有热情有激情但是不能太冲动太盲目了,像接手店面这样的事一定要多方考察后再决定。


       店铺开业伊始,她们听朋友说上海那边的货比较好,有很多这里没有的款式,价格也比较低。考虑到衣物的质量优劣不能简单的通过图片分辨出来,为了保证货物的质量,最初她们就直接跑去上海进货,然而后来,她们发现银基商贸城三、四楼批发服装的地方竟然也有跟她们千里迢迢从上海拿回来的一样的货物。这样一来,折腾下来就变的很不划算了。她说现在想想去上海拿货也是一种冲动,其实当时很多行动都应该冷静下来,仔细地看清形势。她说还是希望大学生如果自己有想法的话就积极创业,积极实现自己的梦想。


       很多创业者都有的一个共同的难关就是资金问题,因为家人开始一直不支持,所以最初的资金是她和朋友两个人之前上班的积蓄,又跟另外的朋友借了一些,把店给盘点开了下来,而后就不剩什么钱了。当店面接手后,面对已成的事实,看着她们面临的困难,家里人也就不得不给她们支持了。她们的店开张的时候没有对外界进行大肆宣传活动,但是知道的朋友都来捧场了,很是热闹了一番。虽然她们开店以来算是淡季,但是她们进的货还是基本上都销出去了,接下来她们会积极冷静的等待旺季的到来。


       在创业的过程中总是不会一帆风顺的,她说她早就想到过。在经历了商业陷阱后,她会冷静面对以后创业道路上遇到的问题。现在也许是她们创业道路中最艰难的时候,但她说她会坚持。记者很开心看到绕广平并没有被创业的困难吓倒,也对创业有充分的思想准备,知道创业的艰辛是常人难以想象的。记者相信在创业中,只要保持清醒的头脑,成功就有了希望。在困难面前咬牙坚持,一定能走出自己的一片天地。

从事网赚多年来,经历了很多的风风雨雨,终于有了一些领悟。我想,大多数从事网赚的人士应该也会有我同样的遭遇,也会形成自己的一些见解吧。我期待能和大家一起讨论, 共同促进网赚业的健康良性的发展。 我将从事网赚的人分为六个等级,每个等级都有自身的特点。当然,网赚业博大精深, 远非我一个用一篇短小的文章能够讲清楚,分析透彻的,这些要需要我们大家共同努力来达到。


第一级:看邮件


【简介】大部分人都是通过看邮件而从事网赚行业的。他们大多数听信看邮件能够月薪几千甚至上万元的广告,到这里来淘金的。工作一段时间后,或者发现根本不可能,或者是被骗子公司欺骗了。因此,他们会认为网赚全是骗子,发誓以后再也不听信这些谎言了。只有部分坚持下来的人得到了报酬,但是也不会多高,通过我下面的分析可以看的很清楚。这一级别的网赚人工作很简单,只是打开邮件,点击邮件就可以了,更本不用动脑。但是,这种工作也特别辛苦,不停的点邮件,收入也偏低。可能还有一部分人是通过冲浪公司开始的。因为冲浪公司的运作种类比较多,收入算法 不一样,以后我会专门写一篇讨论,这里不作介绍。


【要求】懂得如何上网,会收邮件;能够认识一些基本的英文单词(因为现在邮件公司 有很多反作弊手段,特别是好的邮件公司)


【收入】因为每个人的差异,不可能精确的计算,这里的只是做一个统计。注意,我这里是按照比较熟练的程度来统计的,对于新手,肯定是要打折扣的。如果你眼疾手快,可能会高于这个收入,但是不可能很多。为了简单,下面按1$(美元)=8¥(人民币)计算。工作时间/天公司数量平均收入($/天/公司)


有些人不服气,认为平均每个邮件公司只给0.1$太少了,随便都能找到一封邮件就值0.1$的公司,甚至有1$,5$,10$的公司。如果你是新手,一定要注意我下面的话。是的,现在网上是有好多诚如你所讲的公司,但是不是新手应该玩的的公司,因为它们根本不可能让你把现金取出来。这些公司有些是百分百的骗子公司(如1000cents-1000dollars),有些既可以说是骗子,也可以说不是骗子(如500cents-10000dollars)。因为对网赚高手来说它可以做流量交换,它们就不是骗子。但是对于网赚新手来说,它们就是骗子,你就是免费在帮别人挣钱。请新手们牢牢记住这一点:这些公司是绝对不可能让你取走现金的。现实的情况是,真正能够取钱的优秀公司每封邮件的价值在0.0025$-0.01$之间。如果超过这个标准,就要睁大你的眼睛,到各大网赚论坛去打听了。一般这些公司平均一天给你十几封邮件和点击,才不多每天从一个邮件公司挣到的就是0.01$。


【评价】这个级别的人是网赚的最底层一级,也是工作累,挣钱少的一级。这也符合“天上不会掉馅饼”的哲理,不用脑子的在哪个行业都是这样。


【注意】 1、骗子公司很多(特别是邮件公司),看主页的网赚黑名单就可以知道。有意从事的人 一定要找到可靠的,信誉好的公司,以免白白浪费时间。
2、新手要坚决做低支付公司(10$以下起付),这条路线不能动摇。对于中支付公司(10$以上50$以下支付)顶多不要超过两个,而且一定要是信誉极好的。对于高支付公司(起付 50$以上),把眼睛闭上,耳朵塞住,当它不存在。
3、如果真的打算从事网赚的新手,一定要坚持2,3个月,不要轻易放弃。如果没有耐心,就找一些无最低支付的公司做,只是挣的钱更少些,而且公司不多。随便说一下,在注册之前,最好先去注册e-gold(一家网上银行,注册相当简单,很适合新手,具体见主页);然后准备好邮箱。


第二级:注册


【简介】如果想通过网赚这种途径赚到钱,至少要练到这一级。注册赚钱比邮件赚钱报酬高,而且要轻松。很多邮件公司也提供注册赚钱项目,你帐户中的paidsignup就是这一类。还有些其它类型的公司,会注册就可以提高10倍,甚至100倍。如冲浪公司——,不注册每1000点值0.01$;如果你能注册到6个offer,每1000点值1$,整整100倍。这也就是为什么有人说——是骗子的原因。还比如myfreeshares公司,如果会注册就可以极大的提高自己的股份。进行注册赚钱最好的途径就是加入clixies公司。它是一家只经营注册赚钱业务的优秀公司,5$就可以支付,几天就可以做到。在进行注册时,一定要按照它给的提示一步步进行。这很锻炼英文的阅读能力,而且也很好玩,像是在探宝一样。我每次注册成功一个公司都很 高兴。


【要求】懂得如何上网;对英语的要求较高,要有一定的英文阅读能力。


【收入】与上面一样,我也是以注册到达比较熟练的程度来做估计,这只反映平均水平。而且这只是反映邮件和注册公司提供的数据,我上面已经说过,对于其它类型的公司不能这 么计算,因为在这些公司里注册不会直接对应金钱。


【评价】这个级别的工作相对轻松,报酬也高。但是有一个注册成功率得问题,这也是一些新手望而却步得原因。熟练之后,一般注册都能成功。对一些公司来说,给的钱比第一级高很多。而且,有一些填表工具可以提高注册效率,熟练掌握可以挣更多一些钱。注册赚钱还可以极大的提高你的英文阅读能力,为进入更高的级别奠定基础。


【注意】 1、注册网赚。公司一般要求等过7天确认后才会给你加钱,或者你的钱才变得可用,这样 你需要有点耐性。
2、注册是一定要仔细看清楚提示,有些被注册的公司不接受中国会员,或者有些特殊要求。如果盲目注册,有可能被认为是在作弊。不但钱得不到,还有被扣钱,甚至帐号被删。


第三级:发展下线


【简介】几乎每个网络赚钱公司为了吸引更多的会员,都提供发展下线的机制,这为网赚人士提供了一种赚更多钱的机会。网络赚钱公司会给每个会员一个发展下线的链接,并会提供一些链接广告代码。通过这个链接,就可以发展你的下线,并从中收益。我认为,到这个级别,最好要有自己的网站,有自己的宣传阵地,才能收到很好的效果。当然,这不是必须的。


【要求】有一定的英文阅读能力;最好有一定的网页制作能力;有一定的市场营销能力。


【收入】这和个人能力有很大关系,但也有一些基本的公式。一般你的第一级下线有5个人(指真正工作的下线),你的收入就会是上面两级的两倍。按照这个算法,如果你的一级下线达到20人,月收入就应该可以在3000以上。

第四级:流量交换


【简介】做流量交换和搜索的网络赚钱公司的信誉比较好,IP地址的访问流量达到一定数就马上给你钱。因此,你的任务就是努力去提高你的独立IP流量。除了上面你锻炼了的营销能力外,赚友们还发明了很多新的玩法。如利用邮件网赚公司做流量交换,使用代理作弊等。如果要精通某些玩法,可能需求你对网络的运作原理有较深的理解。


【要求】较强的营销能力;较深的计算机网络知识。

第五级:独立探索

【要求】有很高的英文水平;对网络有很深的理解;有很强的分析和预测能力。


【收入】具体收入不好说,但至少是白领阶级。


【评价】这一级别只是停留在摹仿和引进先进技术的层面,不是自己创造,但这是进入下一级的必经之路。


第六级:网赚大师

  钢材期货上市是对期货市场自身建设的肯定


  国家以超出市场预期的速度批准钢材期货上市,我认为应是基于以下几个方面考虑:



  首先是对期货市场自身建设的肯定。经过近20年的磨练,期货市场运行规范程度已达到相当高的水平,行业重大纠纷等违规违纪事件鲜有发生;风控能力大为提高,尤其是经受了2008年10月后全球衍生品暴跌行情的检验;市场规模已快速壮大,已成为仅次于美国的全球第二大期货市场;市场的价格发现功能和套期保值功能得到显著发挥。



  其次是从落实国务院“关于当前金融促进经济发展的若干意见”的角度出发,意见明确提出要“尽快推出适应国民经济发展需要的钢材等商品期货新品种”。



  再次是从钢铁行业自身发展要求出发,在经历了去年三季度以来钢材价格暴跌50%左右导致全行业亏损,对行业的冲击巨大,为此行业自身对利用期货套期保值避险工具来规避价格风险有较为迫切的需求,从有关方面了解到,国内一些钢铁龙头企业还专门到国家有关部门呼吁尽快推出钢材期货交易。同时,国内钢材价格体系也比较乱,各厂家各自定价,价格不透明、不权威,为此也迫切需要在期货市场形成权威价格,以指导钢铁行业的产销工作。



  相信随着线材、螺纹钢期货的推出,既是对我国钢材行业的发展具有重要的里程碑意义,同时也是我国期货市场做大做强的重大历史机遇。光大期货将以服务全国期货钢铁行业企业为己任,提供全方位的服务、包括人员培训、业务指导、信息咨询等。

  钢材期货上市对钢铁业和期货业影响深远



  中国证监会批准上海期货交易所开展线材和螺纹钢期货交易,从钢材期货合约及其规则设计特点来看,除了考虑钢材的工艺特点以外,还直接体现出商品期货为国民经济增长服务的指导思想,推出钢材期货对振兴钢铁产业有重要的积极作用。



  我国螺线产量占到了世界产量的65%左右,我国在其价格形成中有较强的影响力,选其为标的物将增强我国在钢材贸易中的定价影响力,提高我国钢铁工业的国际竞争力;其次,除集中交割和期货转现货交割这两中传统的交割方式外,此次钢材期货还创新地推出厂库交割规则。这一规则和品牌注册相结合,一方面将加速部分有实力的钢铁企业的品牌推广,有利于进一步做大做强,对提高我国钢铁产业的集中度有积极的意义,和产业振兴计划有着一脉相承的政策意图,另一方面有利于解决钢材易锈蚀、保质期短的不利因素;此外,根据其对标准仓单的质量规定,只有实力较为雄厚的参与者才能参与交割,这同样有利于他们进一步做大做强,提高竞争力;另外,螺线合约的标准品均选择了规格较高的产品作为标准,符合行业导向、有利于促进产品升级和节约资源,和产业振兴计划中的“产品升级”意图有着类似的政策导向。



  钢材期货的推出一方面将为钢铁产业带来积极的深远影响;另一方面,它不仅将为期货行业发展带来新的业务增长点,大量机构客户的出现也将促进整个期货行业服务水平的提高。

  钢材期货(线材和螺纹钢)推出后其保证金水平将在10%左右(交易所的水平上再加2%—3%),以目前3500元/吨左右的线螺市场价格计算:做一手线材或螺纹钢的期货合约需要占用保证金只有3500元左右;而且钢材价格的活跃性较强、波动范围较大,既有利于大型钢铁企业进行套期保值,也有利于中小投资者进行短线交易;因此钢材期货的推出将成为期货公司新的业务增长点和重要的盈利组成部分。

My experience of serving as a governess

Nowadays, it’s really a sticky business to find a good job. Every year, millions of graduates pour into the job markets, but few could secure good jobs. Many graduates from normal universities take up private teachers as their career. In fact, the salary and environment of private schools and tutorial classes are not so bad. The high salary attracts a large number of newly-graduated students and they regard the job as the springboard to higher employment, such as a civil servant in the government or a teacher in a state-owned school. I don’t think it’s a bad phenomenon. Young people should learn to be tough and grow accompanied by obstacles and frustrations. Only when they have gone through a series of hardships can they understand the real meaning of life. Here I’d like to share one of my experiences as a governess a long time ago.
The first year after I graduated, introduced by one of my acquaintance, I served as a governess to a family. The first time I was led into the hostess’s home, I was so timid and trembled with fear. The light inside was rather dim, I couldn’t make out the outline of furniture and other belongings. Suddenly a big boy popped up from a door. My vague impression on him was that this was a clumsy boy without any expression on his dull face. The hostess turned on the light and ordered the boy to pour a cup of tea for me. The next moment, she talked about her son’s school scores and behaviors and his poor rudimentary knowledge and urged me to help him improve. I smiled shyly and promised to do my utmost. When the real thing began, I realized that the boy knew nothing about English. Apparently, the task lying before me was rather formidable. At first, I taught the boy to read word by word, sentence by sentence, two hours a day. The boy was cooperative. After class, I asked him to read more and try to write from memory. After two weeks, the boy made unbelievable progress. His mother was glad about that. While her son was leaning, she always sat besides him, watching and listening. I haven’t seen the boy’s father. It’s said that he was a train driver. One night, I did meet him, a robust man with few words, but it’s an unpleasant experience for me.
That was a cold winter night of 2004, after class, I meant to go home. The train driver insisted on escorting me downstairs, in thinks for my help for his son. There was not a thread of light in the corridor. In every direction I saw, it’s pitch-dark. I cautiously put my left foot down, with both hand on banisters, groping in the dark. Damned! Why the community managers didn’t install some light bulbs? The man asked me to put my hands on his arms and thus he could support me downstairs. In the darkness, fear and horror overwhelmed me. Many ominous ideas poured into my mind: is the man a good guy? What if… After what seemed a long struggle, I finally found myself on the ground floor, I was relieved. It’s really uncomfortable throughout. Maybe the man only took me as a little sister.
Of course, this is not the most difficult thing. Being a governess is not as easy as you had imagined. You have to ask your salary when the contract expires. Sometimes, they don’t pay you the right money and find fault about your work. But in many cases, we have got to live, and have no other choices. Anyhow, this is a valuable experience for me. Now, I am not a governess any longer. My school don’t allow the teachers set foot in this business, or they will get a disciplinary warning. Now, when I recall that episode, I can’t help laughing.

However, many people that go to a local community college like mine are either people who are looking to save money with cheap tuition and to live at home, or forigners who are also looking for a cheap over-all solution, while still being in America. This how ever is one of the few factors that is adding to the idea of children staying with their parents, long after the age of 20, because they do not have that college aspect playing in.

As for individual support though, as long as it is a family with no complications (like fights) in its past, you will find that members will turn to a family member's support should they can't continue to live in their own home. This support isn't limited to just the parents, but can come from them. As the parents get older, some just live it out by themselves, some move to a retirement home, and other families will take their parents in and watch them. Sometimes the children (and even the parents in cases) see this as an inconvience, and do not wish for it to happen, so the parents living with their children tends to be a last resort for most, but isn't uncommon.

Maria Skłodowska was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867, the fifth and youngest child of well-known teachers Bronisława and Władysław Skłodowski. Maria's older siblings were Zofia (born 1862), Józef (1863), Bronisława (1865) and Helena (1866).

Maria's grandfather Józef Skłodowski had been a respected teacher in Lublin, where he had taught the young Bolesław Prus.[4] Her father Władysław Skłodowski taught mathematics and physics, subjects that Maria was to pursue, and was director successively of two Warsaw gymnasia for boys, in addition to lodging boys in the family home. Her mother, Bronisława, operated a prestigious Warsaw girls' boarding school; she suffered from tuberculosis and died when Maria was twelve. Maria's father was an atheist, and her mother a devout Catholic.[5]

Two years earlier, Maria's oldest sibling, Zofia, had died of typhus. The deaths of her mother and sister, according to Robert William Reid, caused Maria to give up Catholicism and become agnostic.[6]

When she was ten years old, Maria began attending the boarding school that her mother had operated while she was well; next Maria attended a female gymnasium, from which she graduated on 12 June 1883. She spent the following year in the countryside at her father's relatives, and next with her father in Warsaw, where she did some tutoring.

On both the paternal and maternal sides, the family had lost their property and fortunes through patriotic involvements in Polish national uprisings. This condemned each subsequent generation, including that of Maria and her elder sisters and brother, to a difficult struggle to get ahead in life.[7]

Maria made an agreement with her sister Bronisława, that she would give her financial assistance during Bronisława's medical studies in Paris, in exchange for similar assistance two years later.[8] In connection with this, she took a position as governess. First with a lawyer's family in Kraków, then for two years in Ciechanów with a landed family, the Żorawskis, relatives of her father. While working for the latter family, she fell in love with their son Kazimierz Żorawski, which the future eminent mathematician reciprocated. His parents, however, rejected the idea of his marrying the penniless relative, and Kazimierz was unable to oppose them. Maria lost her governess' position.[9] She found another with the Fuchs family in Sopot, on the Baltic Sea coast, where she spent the next year, all the while financially assisting her sister.

At the beginning of 1890, Bronisława, who had a few months earlier married Kazimierz Dłuski, invited Maria to join them in Paris. Maria declined because she could not afford the university tuition and was still counting on marrying Kazimierz Żorawski. She returned home to her father, with whom she remained till the fall of 1891, tutoring, studying at the clandestine Floating University, and beginning her practical scientific training in a laboratory at the Museum of Industry and Agriculture run by her cousin Józef Boguski, who had been assistant in St. Petersburg to the great Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleyev.[10]

In October 1891, at her sister's insistence and after receiving a letter from Żorawski definitively breaking up with her, she decided to go to France after all.[5]

Maria's breakup with Żorawski was tragic for both. He soon earned a doctorate and pursued an academic career as a mathematician, becoming a professor and rector of Kraków University and president of the Warsaw Society of Learning; still, as an old man, a mathematics professor at the Warsaw Polytechnic, he would sit contemplatively in front of the statue of Maria Skłodowska before the Radium Institute that she had founded.[11] Maria, in Paris, briefly found shelter with her sister and brother-in-law before renting a primitive garret[12] and proceeding with her studies of physics, chemistry and mathematics at the Sorbonne (the University of Paris).

There is an old saying goes, Money makes the mare go .I don't agree with it. I always believe that there are many things more value and more important than money. Money isn't everything.



When I was a child, my family was very poor, but my farther always taught us, " though we are poor, we should have ambition. we shouldn't ask for the money that doesn't belong to us, and shouldn't take the things that doesn't belong to us." I always keep it in mind.



When I was at school, by the time the terms begin, my dad was always anxious for our tuition fee, at that time, I really wished I could grow up, and earned the money for my dad. I really hoped that I could own much money. when seeing the other children wear new clothes, I admire them . I really hoped I can own money, to change my old cothses.



When I grow up, the economy of our family become better and better, and also, I can earn money by myself. But for money, I always make special reaction which others can't understand. when having an interview for a part time job, the boss told me that the salary was 600 for me, I thought it was higher, then told him 500 was ok. During the mid-autumn festival, my boss give me the money that are 2-3 times than my colleague, and I told him it was too much, I really can't find the reasons for taking so much money.



For this kind of reations, many people said they didn't understand me, I smiled with them. I can't say I don't love money, money is not important for me. everyone love money, money can buy anything that you want, can give you a better life you dream. I love money very much, only because there are many things more important than money in my mind. in this corporeal society, many people lose themself and their direction just because of money, they are willing to be the helot of money. so poor they are! I feel so lucky not to be one member of them. yet I should thank my dad, thank god, thank life.

Talk about part-time employment


It is a common occurrence for students to have jobs. Especially the college students, they always have a part-time job.


This edge, but I think that the advantages more than the disadvantages.


These are my opinion below:


1.       Holding down a job while enrolled in college can be very stressful for a student. College departments that offer student jobs tend to have a better understanding of the academic demands that are placed on the students that they hire. Since many of the college departments only hire for part time help, it is not hard for them to work around their schedules. Other employers, that are not part of the college environment, may not be as willing to work around class schedules. I think a tension can help the students to study successfully. That’s good for them.


2.       Finding student jobs in the school can be beneficial to the students. Students, who are able to help run the campus, are more likely to adjust to college life. Jobs in the schools are usually offered in many areas like the bookstore, cafeteria, and several administrative offices. I think jobs in the school are a great way for students to meet other students and get to know their peers and professors.


3.       It may seem that the more hours’ jobs take out of the students weekly schedules, the worse students will do in their classes. Studies have shown that this is not the case at all. It has been observed through several studies that students who are employed do as well and in some cases better than those who are not working jobs. The same studies found that grades tend to improve the more hours a student works during a week, but the improvement levels off if one works more than 20 hours per week. So you can see that there isn’t any problem between study and work.


Despite all the stress and grief that employment can cause to some, seeking employment during the academic school semesters may be inevitable. With the raising cost of college tuition, many students are finding that federal financial aid and or student loans are not capable of covering all tuition related expenses. For those that are able to get a free ride, employment is needed to cover the cost of expensive college textbooks and a little extra spending money.

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO
of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June
12, 2005.




I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of
the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from
college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a
college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my
life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.


The first story is about connecting the dots.


I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then
stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I
really quit. So why did I drop out?


It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young,
unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for
adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by
college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted
at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out
they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So
my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of
the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want
him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out
that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father
had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final
adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my
parents promised that I would someday go to college.


And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a
college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my
working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college
tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no
idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was
going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the
money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop
out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at
the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever
made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required
classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones
that looked interesting.


It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on
the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢
deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town
every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna
temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following
my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let
me give you one example:


Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy
instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster,
every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.
Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal
classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do
this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying
the amount of space between different letter combinations, about
what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical,
artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I
found it fascinating.


None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my
life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first
Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all
into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography.
If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac
would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced
fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no
personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I
would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal
computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of
course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I
was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten
years later.


Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only
connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots
will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something
— your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never
let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.


My second story is about love and loss.


I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and
I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard,
and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage
into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just
released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and
I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired
from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone
who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for
the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the
future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When
we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out.
And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult
life was gone, and it was devastating.


I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I
had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had
dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David
Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so
badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about
running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on
me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not
changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love.
And so I decided to start over.


I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from
Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The
heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of
being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to
enter one of the most creative periods of my life.


During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT,
another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman
who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first
computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most
successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of
events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology
we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current
renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family
together.


I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't
been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess
the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a
brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that
kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what
you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your
lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and
the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is
great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you
do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As
with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And,
like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the
years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.


My third story is about death.


When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you
live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly
be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the
past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked
myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do
what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No"
for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.


Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool
I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.
Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride,
all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away
in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to
avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are
already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.


About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at
7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.
I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this
was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I
should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor
advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is
doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids
everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in
just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up
so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to
say your goodbyes.


I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a
biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my
stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and
got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was
there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope
the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare
form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the
surgery and I'm fine now.


This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its
the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it,
I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death
was a useful but purely intellectual concept:


No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't
want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all
share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be,
because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It
is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the
new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now,
you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be
so dramatic, but it is quite true.


Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's
life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results
of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions
drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the
courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already
know what you truly want to become. Everything else is
secondary.


When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The
Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation.
It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in
Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This
was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop
publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and
polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35
years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing
with neat tools and great notions.


Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth
Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final
issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover
of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country
road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were
so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay
Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay
Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And
now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.


Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

  我在Reed大学读了六个月之后就退学了,但是在十八个月以后——我真正的作出退学决定之前,我还经常去学校。我为什么要退学呢?


  

  故事从我出生的时候讲起。我的亲生母亲是一个年轻的,没有结婚的大学毕业生。她决定让别人收养我,
她十分想让我被大学毕业生收养。所以在我出生的时候,她已经做好了一切的准备工作,能使得我被一个律师和他的妻子所收养。但是她没有料到,当我出生之后,
律师夫妇突然决定他们想要一个女孩。所以我的生养父母(他们在待选名单上)突然在半夜接到了一个电话:“我们现在这儿有一个不小心生出来的男婴,你们想要他吗?”他们回答道:
“当然!”但是我亲生母亲随后发现,我的养母从来没有上过大学,我的养父
甚至从没有读过高中。她拒绝签这个收养合同。只是在几个月以后,我的父母答应她一定要让我上大学,那个时候她才软化同意。

  

  在十七岁那年,我真的上了大学。但是我很愚蠢的选择了一个几乎和你们斯坦福大学一样贵的学校,
我父母还处于蓝领阶层,他们几乎把所有积蓄都花在了我的学费上面。在六个月后,
我已经看不到其中的价值所在。我不知道我真正想要做什么,我也不知道大学能怎样帮助我找到答案。但是在这里,我几乎花光了我父母这一辈子的
全部积蓄。所以我决定要退学,我觉得这是个正确的决定。不能否认,我当时确实非常的害怕,
但是现在回头看看,那的确是我这一生中最棒的一个决定。在我做出退学决定的那一刻,
我终于可以不必去读那些令我提不起丝毫兴趣的课程了。然后我可以开始去修那些看起来有点意思的课程。


但是这并不是那么罗曼蒂克。我失去了我的宿舍,所以我只能在朋友房间的地板上面睡觉,我去捡可以换5美分的可乐罐,仅仅为了填饱肚子,
在星期天的晚上,我需要走七英里的路程,穿过这个城市到Hare
Krishna神庙(注:位于纽约Brooklyn下城),只是为了能吃上好饭——这个星期唯一一顿好一点的饭,我喜欢那里的饭菜。


 

  我跟着我的直觉和好奇心走, 遇到的很多东西,此后被证明是无价之宝。让我给你们举一个例子吧:

  当时看起来这些东西在我的生命中,好像都没有什么实际应用的可能。但是十年之后,当我们在设计第一台Macintosh电脑的时候,就不是那样了。我把当时我学的那些
东西全都设计进了Mac。那是第一台使用了漂亮的印刷字体的电脑。如果我当时没有退学, 就不会有机会去参加这个我感兴趣的美术字课程,
Mac就不会有这么多丰富的字体,以及赏心悦目的字体间距。因为Windows只是抄袭了Mac,所以现在个人电脑就不会有现在这么美妙的字型了。


  

  当然我在大学的时候,还不可能把从前的点点滴滴串连起来,但是当我十年后回顾这一切的时候,真的豁然开朗了。



  再次说明的是,你在向前展望的时候不可能将这些片断串连起来;你只能在回顾的时候将点点滴滴串连起来。所以你必须相信这些片断会在你未来的某一天串连起来。你必须要相信某些东西:你的勇气、目的、生命、因缘......这个过程从来没有令我失望,只是让我的生命更加地与众不同。


  

  我的第二个故事是关于爱和失去。

  

  我非常幸运, 因为我在很早的时候就找到了我钟爱的东西。Woz和我在二十岁的时候就在父母的车库里面开创了苹果公司。我们工作得很努力,
十年之后,
这个公司从那两个车库中的穷小子发展到了超过四千名的雇员、价值超过二十亿的大公司。在公司成立的第九年,我们刚刚发布了最好的产品,那就是Macintosh。我也快要到三十岁了。在那一年,

  我的第三个故事是关于死亡的。

  

  当我十七岁的时候,
我读到了一句话:“如果你把每一天都当作生命中最后一天去生活的话,那么有一天你会发现你是正确的。”这句话给我留下了一个印象。从那时开始,过了33
年,我在每天早晨都会对着镜子问自己:“如果今天是我生命中的最后一天,
你会不会完成你今天想做的事情呢?”当答案连续多天是“No”的时候, 我知道自己需要改变某些事情了。

  

  “记住你即将死去”是我一生中遇到的最重要箴言。它帮我指明了生命中重要的选择。因为几乎所有的事情,

The great thing about a job interview is the way that it narrows
the field. If you can get in front of the people making a hiring
decision, that means that you've already moved from a group of
perhaps 100 resumes to a field of
just a few serious contenders. At that point, your chance of
getting a job offer improves dramatically.



Of course, having surmounted that huge hurdle, the last thing you
want to do is blow it. To that end, here are 10 job-interview gaffes to avoid.



1. Complaining about the parking or
directions(抱怨停车位或门难找)


Don't think it doesn't happen! As cordial and happy-go-lucky as
your interviewers may seem, they don't want to hear a job-seeker
complain that the place was hard to find or that the parking is
inconvenient. The best (that is, the worst) example of this I ever
experienced as an HR person came from the candidate who said,
"Seven handicapped parking spaces next to the front door? What, are
you having a wheelchair convention or something?" That was a short
interview.



2. Bad-mouthing your previous job, manager, or
company(对以前的工作、上司或公司责备)


If you've been laid off or suffered some other unpleasant
experience at your last job, it's easy to launch into a litany of
everything the old employer did wrong. Don't do it! The interviewer
is bound to wonder "Will this person be bashing me behind my back
on some future interview, too?" Zip it.



3. Digging into details off the bat(匆忙陷入细节)

The typical selection process allows plenty of time for you to
learn everything you need to know about the company's dental plan,
its tuition-reimbursement policy, and the size of your cubicle.
Don't ask about any of these items on a first interview, when you should be focusing the
conversation on the role and the organization.



4. Groveling(无尊严地求职)

Employers want to hire people who can do the jobs and who are
enthusiastic about the work. What's not so appealing is the
candidate whose every word and gesture conveys the message, "Hire
me, I beg you!" Joblessness is no fun, but you don't help your
chances of getting the nod by presenting yourself as a candidate
whose most notable attribute is desperation.



5. Answering a question before you understand
it(急于回答需要深思熟虑的问题)


The absolute worst answer to any interview question is the response
that shows you weren't really listening. When an interviewer asks a
question that requires thought, like, "Tell me about a time when
you had to convince a team of people to change gears," you don't
want to blurt out, "Oh, I've done that a million times!" Any "tell
me about a time when" question is a question that the interviewer
has chosen to elicit a specific problem/solution story from you.
Take the time to think through the question and compose a
thoughtful answer. A few minutes of silence in the room won't kill
anybody.



6. Spacing out(心神不定)

Any interviewer worth her salt will be able tell when you've zoned
out. If you're wondering whether the 5:40 train will get you home
in time to watch the playoff game, the interviewer will spot it in
your eyes. If you're really out of it, he may throw you a curve
ball like, "So, who would you say was the most effective member of
Teddy Roosevelt's cabinet, and why?" Stay in the room, with your
eyes either meeting the interviewer's or looking thoughtfully at
the ceiling. Or your shoes.



7. Slouching(无规无矩)

We'll throw in tipping the chair back off its front legs, resting
your head on your hand, and lacing your fingers together behind
your head.



8. Cursing(临时紧张)

Interviewers love to put job candidates at ease. When you reach the
state of ease that lets an "f-bomb" escape your lips, you've gone
too far.



9. "Opening the kimono."(敞开心扉)

It's tempting to share with a sympathetic interviewer the news that
this job search has been really hard, that you're not getting
callbacks, and that you've already sent out 150 resumes. Don't do it. Smart job candidates put
out a vibe that says, "I'm glad to be here with you and this job
might be fun, but I'm a capable person who's aware of his value on
the job market."



10. Doing anything disgusting(坏习惯令人作呕)

The long list of personal gross factors includes picking one's
teeth or nose, spitting, and other unmentionables that are best
left to the imagination. Any of these is a sure-fire
interview-killer (and can we really blame the employer for that?).
One candidate asked me for a cup of water, took a sip, swished it
around in his mouth, and spat into a potted plant. Niiiiiice!

Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, and the
first lady of the United States:


I've come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men
and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly
to the men and women who sent us here.


I know that for many Americans watching right now, the state of
our economy is a concern that rises above all others. And
rightly so. If you haven't been personally affected by this
recession, you probably know someone who has — a friend, a
neighbor, a member of your family. You don't need to hear
another list of statistics to know that our economy is in
crisis, because you live it every day. It's the worry you wake up
with and the source of sleepless nights. It's the job you thought
you'd retire from but now have lost; the business you built your
dream upon that’s now hanging by a thread; the college
acceptance letter your child had to put back in the
envelope. The impact of this recession is real, and it is
everywhere.


But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken,
though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight
I want every American to know this:


We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of
America will emerge stronger than before.


The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny
of this nation. The answers to our problems don't lie beyond our
reach. They exist in our laboratories and universities, in
our fields and our factories, in the imaginations of our
entrepreneurs and the pride of the hardest-working people on
Earth. Those qualities that have made America the greatest force of
progress and prosperity in human history we still possess in
ample measure. What is required now is for this country to
pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and
take responsibility for our future once more.


Now if we're honest with ourselves, we'll admit that for
too long, we have not always met these responsibilities — as a
government or as a people. I say this not to lay blame or look
backwards, but because it is only by understanding how we arrived
at this moment that we'll be able to lift ourselves out of this
predicament.


The fact is, our economy did not fall into decline overnight.
Nor did all of our problems begin when the housing market
collapsed or the stock market sank. We have known for
decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy.
Yet we import more oil today than ever before. The cost of health
care eats up more and more of our savings each year, yet we keep
delaying reform. Our children will compete for jobs in a global
economy that too many of our schools do not prepare them for. And
though all these challenges went unsolved, we still managed to
spend more money and pile up more debt, both as individuals
and through our government, than ever before.


In other words, we have lived through an era where too often,
short-term gains were prized over long-term prosperity,
where we failed to look beyond the next payment, the next quarter,
or the next election. A surplus became an excuse to transfer
wealth to the wealthy instead of an opportunity to invest in our
future. Regulations were gutted for the sake of a quick
profit at the expense of a healthy market. People bought homes they
knew they couldn't afford from banks and lenders who pushed
those bad loans anyway. And all the while, critical debates
and difficult decisions were put off for some other time on some
other day.


Well that day of reckoning has arrived, and the time to
take charge of our future is here.


Now is the time to act boldly and wisely — to not only revive
this economy, but to build a new foundation for lasting prosperity.
Now is the time to jump-start job creation, restart lending,
and invest in areas like energy, health care and education that
will grow our economy, even as we make hard choices to bring our
deficit down. That is what my economic agenda is
designed to do, and that's what I'd like to talk to you about
tonight.


It's an agenda that begins with jobs.


As soon as I took office, I asked this Congress to send me a
recovery plan by President's Day that would put people back to work
and put money in their pockets. Not because I believe in bigger
government — I don't. Not because I'm not mindful of the massive
debt we've inherited — I am. I called for action because the
failure to do so would have cost more jobs and caused more
hardships. In fact, a failure to act would have worsened our
long-term deficit by assuring weak economic growth for
years. That's why I pushed for quick action. And tonight, I am
grateful that this Congress delivered, and pleased to say that the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is now law.


Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5
million jobs. More than 90 percent of these jobs will be in the
private sector — jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges,
constructing wind turbines and solar panels, laying
broadband and expanding mass transit.


Because of this plan, there are teachers who can now keep their
jobs and educate our kids. Health care professionals can continue
caring for our sick. There are 57 police officers who are still on
the streets of Minneapolis tonight because this plan
prevented the layoffs their department was about to
make.


Because of this plan, 95 percent of the working households in
America will receive a tax cut — a tax cut that you will see in
your paychecks beginning on April 1.


Because of this plan, families who are struggling to pay
tuition costs will receive a $2,500 tax credit for all four years
of college. And Americans who have lost their jobs in this
recession will be able to receive extended
unemployment benefits and continued health care
coverage to help them weather this storm.


I know there are some in this chamber and watching at home who
are skeptical of whether this plan will work. I understand
that skepticism. Here in Washington, we've all seen how quickly
good intentions can turn into broken promises and wasteful
spending. And with a plan of this scale comes
enormous responsibility to get it right.


That is why I have asked Vice President Biden to lead a tough,
unprecedented oversight effort — because nobody
messes with Joe. I have told each member of my Cabinet as
well as mayors and governors across the country that they
will be held accountable by me and the American people for
every dollar they spend. I have appointed a proven and
aggressive inspector general to ferret out any
and all cases of waste and fraud. And we have created a new
Web site called
recovery.gov
so that every American can find out how and where
their money is being spent.


So the recovery plan we passed is the first step in getting our
economy back on track. But it is just the first step.
Because even if we manage this plan flawlessly, there will
be no real recovery unless we clean up the credit crisis that has
severely weakened our financial system.


I want to speak plainly and candidly about this issue
tonight, because every American should know that it directly
affects you and your family's well-being. You should also know that
the money you've deposited in banks across the country is
safe, your insurance is secure and you can rely on the
continued operation of our financial system. That is not the source
of concern.


The concern is that if we do not restart lending in this
country, our recovery will be choked off before it even
begins.


You see the flow of credit is the lifeblood of our
economy. The ability to get a loan is how you finance the
purchase of everything from a home to a car to a college education;
how stores stock their shelves, farms buy equipment, and businesses
make payroll.


But credit has stopped flowing the way it should. Too many bad
loans from the housing crisis have made their way onto the books of
too many banks. With so much debt and so little confidence, these
banks are now fearful of lending out any more money to households,
to businesses or to each other. When there is no lending, families
can't afford to buy homes or cars. So businesses are forced to make
layoffs. Our economy suffers even more, and credit dries up even
further.


That is why this administration is moving swiftly and
aggressively to break this destructive cycle, restore
confidence and restart lending.


We will do so in several ways. First, we are creating a new
lending fund that represents the largest effort ever to help
provide auto loans, college loans and small business loans to the
consumers and entrepreneurs who keep this economy running.


Second, we have launched a housing plan that will help
responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower
their monthly payments and refinance their mortgages. It's a
plan that won't help speculators or that neighbor down the
street who bought a house he could never hope to afford, but it
will help millions of Americans who are struggling with declining
home values — Americans who will now be able to take advantage of
the lower interest rates that this plan has already helped bring
about. In fact, the average family who refinances today can save
nearly $2000 per year on their mortgage.


Third, we will act with the full force of the federal government
to ensure that the major banks that Americans depend on have enough
confidence and enough money to lend even in more difficult times.
And when we learn that a major bank has serious problems, we will
hold accountable those responsible, force the necessary
adjustments, provide the support to clean up their balance
sheets, and assure the continuity of a strong, viable
institution that can serve our people and our economy.


I understand that on any given day, Wall Street may be more
comforted by an approach that gives banks bailouts with no
strings attached and that holds nobody accountable for their
reckless decisions. But such an approach won't solve the
problem. And our goal is to quicken the day when we restart lending
to the American people and American business and end this crisis
once and for all.


I intend to hold these banks fully accountable for the
assistance they receive, and this time they will have to
clearly demonstrate how taxpayer dollars result in more lending for
the American taxpayer. This time, CEOs won't be able to use
taxpayer money to pad their paychecks or buy fancy drapes or
disappear on a private jet. Those days are over.


Still, this plan will require significant resources from
the federal government — and yes, probably more than we've already
set aside. But while the cost of action will be great, I can assure
you that the cost of inaction will be far greater, for it
could result in an economy that sputters along for not
months or years, but perhaps a decade. That would be worse for our
deficit, worse for business, worse for you and worse for the next
generation. And I refuse to let that happen.


I understand that when the last administration asked this
Congress to provide assistance for struggling banks,
Democrats and Republicans alike were infuriated by
the mismanagement and results that followed. So were the American
taxpayers. So was I.


So I know how unpopular it is to be seen as helping banks right
now, especially when everyone is suffering in part from
their bad decisions. I promise you — I get it.


But I also know that in a time of crisis, we cannot afford to
govern out of anger or yield to the politics of the moment.
My job — our job — is to solve the problem. Our job is to govern
with a sense of responsibility. I will not spend a single penny for
the purpose of rewarding a single Wall Street executive, but
I will do whatever it takes to help the small business that can't
pay its workers or the family that has saved and still can't get a
mortgage.


That's what this is about. It's not about helping banks — it's
about helping people. Because when credit is available again, that
young family can finally buy a new home. And then some company will
hire workers to build it. And then those workers will have money to
spend, and if they can get a loan too, maybe they'll finally buy
that car or open their own business. Investors will return
to the market, and American families will see their retirement
secured once more. Slowly but surely, confidence will return, and
our economy will recover.


So I ask this Congress to join me in doing whatever proves
necessary. Because we cannot consign our nation to an
open-ended recession. And to ensure that a crisis of this
magnitude never happens again, I ask Congress to move
quickly on legislation that will finally reform our outdated
regulatory system. It is time to put in place tough, new
commonsense rules of the road so that our financial market rewards
drive and innovation, and punishes shortcuts and
abuse.


The recovery plan and the financial stability plan are
the immediate steps we're taking to revive our economy in
the short-term. But the only way to fully restore America's
economic strength is to make the long-term investments that will
lead to new jobs, new industries, and a renewed ability to compete
with the rest of the world. The only way this century will be
another American century is if we confront at last the price of our
dependence on oil and the high cost of health care, the
schools that aren't preparing our children and the mountain of debt
they stand to inherit. That is our responsibility.


In the next few days, I will submit a budget to Congress.
So often, we have come to view these documents as simply numbers on
a page or laundry lists of programs. I see this document
differently. I see it as a vision for America — as a
blueprint for our future.


My budget does not attempt to solve every problem or address
every issue. It reflects the stark reality of what we've
inherited — a trillion dollar deficit, a financial crisis
and a costly recession.


Given these realities, everyone in this chamber — Democrats and
Republicans — will have to sacrifice some worthy priorities
for which there are no dollars. And that includes me.


But that does not mean we can afford to ignore our long-term
challenges. I reject the view that says our problems will simply
take care of themselves, that says government has no role in laying
the foundation for our common prosperity.


For history tells a different story. History reminds us that at
every moment of economic upheaval and transformation,
this nation has responded with bold action and big ideas. In the
midst of civil war, we laid railroad tracks from one coast
to another that spurred commerce and industry. From
the turmoil of the industrial revolution came a
system of public high schools that prepared our citizens for a new
age. In the wake of war and depression, the GI Bill sent a
generation to college and created the largest middle-class in
history. And a twilight struggle for freedom led to a nation
of highways, an American on the moon and an explosion of technology
that still shapes our world.
